The two most popular models of raw dog food diets are 80:10:10 and B.A.R.F. Here, we will briefly discuss what they are and how they work.

80-10-10

The 80-10-10 model is designed to replicate closest to the average makeup of prey animals. This approach to raw feeding focuses on a specific ratio of ingredients, which are as follows.

10% Muscle Meat, 10% bone and 10% secreting offal (5% of which is always liver)

80-10-10 model is well balanced. It is important to remember to feed a variety of proteins, a minimum of 3-4 is recommended but the more the better.

B.A.R.F

The acronym "BARF" stands for "Bones And Raw Food" or "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food". It follows a very similar ratio to 80:10:10 whilst also incorporating the likes of species appropriate fruits and veggies. Typically, a BARF formula will contain 20% fruit and veg. Fruits and vegetables provide additional nutrients, fibre, and phytonutrients. You may also see this written as 80:20.

To keep things simple, we have a whole section on our website dedicated to 80:10:10 and 80:20 minces. When it comes to raw feeding, you do not have to stick to one brand or protein source. Variety is key, different meats provide different nutrients so the bigger the range you feed the better. It is also perfectly fine to switch between 80:10:10 and 80:20 minces, you do not need to choose one or the other.

Optional Extras

You can choose to add additional supplements and foods to complement a raw diet. Whilst they aren’t a necessity, many offer additional health benefits. Some examples include:

Eggs: One whole raw egg, with or without the shell up to three times a week. (Make sure to crack it!)

Oily Fish: Sprats, Mackerel, Salmon & Herring are a few examples. Recommended up to three times week. Best fed frozen.

Kefir: Rich in B complex vitamins, Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin K, biotin, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium.

Bone Broth: Classed as a super-food for dogs. You can easily make this at home and freeze in ice cube trays, making a perfect sized portion.

Raw meaty Bones: Some examples include Necks, Feet, wings, ribs. These are great for dental health and provide a great source of enrichment.

Supplements: We offer a range of herbal supplements on our website targeting a range of health benefits. We have both powder and liquid forms and some popular examples include pro-biotic, joint and mobility support, calming aids.
